Next we determine the heat or energy output of the fireplace you want to purchase, calculated in MJ.

An allowance is made of 0.25MJ heat input per 1m³ of the room volume, before permanent ventilation is required.

Determine if ventilation is required
If the megajoule output of the fireplace exceeds the MJ of the allowance of the room volume, permanent ventilation is required.
If the allowance is greater than that of the MJ output of the fireplace, permanent ventilation is not required.
For flue-less (no chimney) add 6.5cm² of the ventilation per cubic meter (1m³) of room volume and flued (chimney) add 3.0cm³ of the ventilation per cubic meter (1m³) of the room volume.
